INTRODUCTION TO CODE 9 ATTACK!

Code 9 Attack is a newly invented game contributed to Pagat by José Adrião uses 40 cards from a standard 52 card deck. The Jack, Queens, Kings, and Jokers are removed from the pack and the game utilizes 2-10 and Aces.

Each player is given one of the four suits, the first player whose ‘9’ is taken from the layout wins the game.

The Deal

Any player may act as dealer first.

The tens are removed from the deck of 40 cards to leave a deck of 36 cards. These 36 cards are shuffled, cut, and placed face-down in the middle of the table. The four 10s are then shuffled separately and a single 10 is dealt to each player. Whichever suit of the 10 a player receives determines the suit that belongs to them during play.

The cards in the deck are arranged into a 6×6 grid on the center of the table.

THE PLAY

Play starts with the player to the right of the dealer. Thereafter, play passes to the right.

During your turn, move one of the nine cards within your suit either vertically or horizontally to an adjacent space. You cannot move cards diagonally. If the place you are moving you card is already occupied, it must be of a different suit and lower rank than the card you’re moving. These conditions must be met or the move is illegal.

Once a card is moved to a legal occupied space, the card that was there before is removed from the grid and set to the side of the playing area. If a card moved to an empty space no card is removed from the layout.

Cards on the edge of the grid can be moved off on the owner’s turn. This can only be done if they are the lowest ranking cards of their suit are on the edges, which is the Ace. Once the ace is moved, the owner can move their two on up to their nine.

Players move a single card one space per turn, after a card is moved it is the next player’s turn. The first player who removes the nine from the grid is the winner of the game.
