Classics vs The New Age | What’s Better?

As an avid board game lover and open geek, I often get asked which I prefer more in the board game world, the classics or the new style games. I struggle to answer this because each one holds a special place in my heart. If it wasn’t for the classics I would have never found my love of board games, but on the other hand, I don’t know if I would still be as active in the community if not for the new style games.

I find most people do, however, have a strong opinion on which is better, and as accepting as I am, I find it hard to understand why I have to choose. So, I have decided to make this article to highlight the great things about both, so that people can maybe begin to understand why it doesn’t have to be one side of the fence or the other. I hope that we can enjoy and play all games equally.

The Classics

Let’s start with the classics; it seems some people tend to forget about the bedrock for which all games were based off sometimes. They started a revolution for a new age of entertainment, that still lives on today. Without them, there would not be any of the new games we love so much.

The classics hold a special place in my memories and I’m sure plenty of other people’s memories as well. Wonderful moments of family fun, where we shared an experience together. That’s the best part about classic board games, the nostalgic feeling, and snippets of past joys.

The New Age

The new age games have something else going for them though. They hold excitement and wonder and a constant feeling, of “what happens next?” You never have to worry about being bored or getting tired of board games now, because there are always millions more to try!

New games are how we keep the community alive. No matter how much you love the classics, you can’t deny that without the new game experience, board games would never have made it this far. They keep the long-time players coming back again and again while bringing new people to the community.

The Verdict

However, you spin it, you can’t dispute the fact that it takes both the new and the old to keep the gaming community going. The classics hold the memories of yore and what made the foundation for the games we love today, while new games push the future and inspire more and more people to join in this wonderland of fun.

Whether you think that the older generation of games are better, or you love the exploration and the trailblazing excitement of the new generation of games, we can all admit that games have bettered our lives. Games bring people from all walks of life together and create a space for relaxation, decompression, and lots of fun! So, whether you agree with my stance or not, we can all find common ground in our love for games, whether they’re old, new, or whatever comes in the future.
